Lawn Care Spanish Fort Al – Tips to keep your lawn healthy with lawn care
You will know that your lawn is healthy when you will see the lush green grass and the beautiful flowers. A perfectly managed lawn will enhance the look of your exterior. However, there is no need to become a slave into to make your lawn look healthy and gorgeous.
Most think that taking care of the lawn is a very tough task and they will have to spend the whole day in order to make their lawn look attractive. However, here we have some of the best tips that will save your time and money as well as will make your lawn look amazing.
1- Keep the blades raised and sharp
Here I am not talking about the blades of the grass, as they will stay sharp when the blades of the mower are perfect. All you have to do is make sure that the blades of your mower are perfectly sharp. The reason is that when you will cut the grass with a dull blade it will turn the leaves brown and your healthy lawn will turn into a dried one. In order to keep the blades sharp you have to follow the given steps:
- Ensure that the gas tank is empty and unplug the mower from the socket
- Now take a wrench and remove the blades from the mower
- Use a mill file and place at 40 to 45 degree on the blade and sharpen the edges
The best thing about this procedure is that it will only take a few minutes and you will get the perfectly sharpened blades for the whole spring season.
2- The water guideline
Most of us are unaware of the water requirements of the garden. The reason is that we have been taught to give water to the garden on daily basis for a healthier growth. You have to keep in mind that grass requires only 1 inch of water in a week. So never water frequently in small amounts because it would lead shallow growth of the roots due to the increased drought.
The best practice is to give water for one hour early morning. The earlier you water the grass the better it would be. If you select evening then the water will not be properly soaked leading to the growth of fungus, so make sure that you always water your grass on time. In case of no rain, make sure that the sprinklers are properly adjusted in your lawn. Use a rain gage!
3- Test the pH of your soil
It is important that you have the complete knowledge about the pH of your soil because grass requires a 6.5 pH to grow properly. There might be some exceptions but you have to maintain the normal ph. You can test the pH of your soil by utilizing a soil test kit available in the market or send the sample to the laboratories. In case the pH has been disturbed, you can follow the given tips:
- In case that soil is acidic, you can add the alkaline lime to enhance the ph.
- If the soil is moderately alkaline then peat moss will be the best solution
- Add sulfur or iron sulfate to the soil if ph test are high
4- Accurate amount of fertilizers
The accurate amount of fertilizers and the rate at which you spread it is very important for the healthy growth of the grass. You have to make sure that you are applying 1.0 to 2.0 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of the lawn. This is the desired amount of fertilizer for common gulf coast lawns. Centipede closer to the 1.0 per 1000, zoysia, Bermuda and St. Augustine closer to the 2.0 per 1000.
5- Know the chemistry of fertilizer
According to the type of grass in your lawn, make sure that you are aware of the type of fertilizer that is required. In case the lawn has cool weather grass then the fall fertilizer with the higher concentration of potassium will be more beneficial.
On the other hand, if there is warm weather grass then the spring fertilizers will be the best option because they have the required mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. You have to make sure that you are aware of the chemistry of your grass. Excessive fertilizer will cause damage to your lawn.
6- Make the weed go away
Proper mowing, watering and chemical application will reduce weeds in the lawn, but start with the basics first! Mowing height and frequency of mowing play a huge factor in weed reduction. Mow your Centipede, Bermuda and Zoysia lawn every 7-10 days in the growing season and no higher than 2.0”. St Augustine is to be mowed a little higher at 3.0”. All grass types are to be watered at 1.0” per week in growing season and ½” during dormant stage.
Herbicides by the way of pre emergence and post emergence will be able to come in and clean up your lawn only after proper cultural practices are in play.
